BMW finds hydrogen increasingly relevant in its endeavors.

During its annual conference, BMW showcased its forward-looking approach to energy transition by introducing the Neue Klasse platform.

The virtual conference offered insights into the upcoming Neue Klasse platform, scheduled for implementation in 2025, which will facilitate the rapid rollout of six new electric models. BMW remains committed to achieving half of its sales from electric vehicles by 2030. However, CEO Olivier Zipse acknowledged the non-linear nature of demand and emphasized the group’s commitment to flexibility. His remarks can be accessed here.

During the interactive session, attendees had the opportunity to directly engage with BMW’s President, Olivier Zipse. One of the questions posed was regarding the potential release of a fuel cell model. Zipse highlighted hydrogen as the fifth element in BMW’s strategy, alongside gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and battery electric options. He emphasized the increasing relevance of hydrogen, particularly in regions like China, attributing its appeal to shorter recharge times compared to batteries. Zipse acknowledged ongoing debates surrounding green and blue hydrogen.

While Zipse maintains that battery-powered electromobility will dominate, he believes hydrogen will gain traction “by the end of the decade.” The inquiry to Zipse was pertinent, given BMW’s prior mention of the Neue Klasse platform’s fuel cell compatibility. Furthermore, BMW’s leadership has consistently expressed optimism about hydrogen’s role in the automotive industry.
